Evangeline Downs: Mile
It looks like a classic northern Louisiana versus southern Louisiana shootout in Saturday night's Evangeline Downs Mile.
Unrullah Bull, who hails from the powerful Cole Norman stable and is the recent winner of the $75,000 Ark-La-Tex Handicap at Louisiana Downs, will make the three-hour van ride to Lafayette and take on local kingpin Oak Hall in the $75,000 stakes.
Claimed for $25,000 by Norman for owner Jim Donan at Lone Star on May 3, Unrullah Bull has rapidly climbed the class ladder. Unrullah Bull won two-turn allowance races in his first two starts for Norman. Following a third-place finish in the Bob Johnson Memorial in his final Lone Star race, Unrullah Bull won the nine-furlong Ark-La-Tex.
Gerard Melancon rides Unrullah Bull at 120 pounds.
Oak Hall won both the John Henry Handicap at 1 1/16 miles and the Evangeline Sprint Championship at six furlongs this meet. Trained by Doyle Wardrop and owned by Ena Ortego, the 5-year-old Oak Hall has won half of his six starts this year. Third in this race a year ago, he has never been better than he is now.
Regular rider James Avant has the call at 120 pounds.
