Evangeline Downs: Fjr Bread N Butter seeks sixth win of year in rich LQHBA Breeders Futurity
Fjr Bread N Butter will be chasing his sixth win of the year at Evangeline Downs on Saturday night, when he starts in Louisiana’s richest race for Quarter Horses, the $1 million LQHBA Breeders Futurity. The restricted Grade 1 race is for 2-year-olds bred in Louisiana and is the most lucrative statebred race for Quarter Horses in the United States, according to the American Quarter Horse Association.
Fjr Bread N Butter has compiled a 5-for-7 record while racing exclusively in Louisiana. He hit a high point in July, when he won the Grade 2, $564,895 Lee Berwick Memorial Futurity at Delta Downs. More recently, Fjr Bread N Butter set the fourth-fastest qualifying time for the 400-yard Breeders Futurity on Oct. 25. He won his trial by a length in 19.73 seconds at Evangeline.
Martin Rubalcava was aboard and has the mount again Saturday for Jaime Torres and trainer Fructuoso Huitron.
Jessanoldlove made a splash during the trials when she set the fastest time in the final heat at 18-1. Jessanoldlove dominated by 3 1/4 lengths, while covering 400 yards in 19.68 seconds. She won her maiden in the race, which was her fourth career start and her second on Lasix.
Bradys March Madness and Philips Streakin add depth to the field as stakes winners. Bradys March Madness won the Grade 2 Laddie at Delta Downs in May, and Philips Streakin won the LQHBA Futurity at Fair Grounds in September.
◗ Martha Claussen, who coordinates fan education for the AQHA, will join track announcer John McGary on his televised racing show to preview Saturday night’s card, which includes the $50,000 Evangeline Downs Derby. Claussen will field questions at a table in the grandstand, where she will give away $2 betting vouchers to the first 100 visitors. The vouchers were provided by the LQHBA.
