Rosacea, Welwal, and Junko won prep races for French Classics on Sunday at ParisLongchamp.  Rosacea, the most impressive of the three horses, captured the Group 3 Prix de la Grotte for fillies over one mile. Welwal was triumphant in the one-mile Prix de Fontainebleau over one mile for colts and geldings, while odds-on Junko had to work hard prevailing by a narrow margin in the Prix Noailles over 1 5/16-miles, the distance of the Prix du Jockey Club, France’s derby.  Rosacea came from last of nine to win the Grotte by a half-length under Mickael Barzalona. The filly relaxed beautifully behind a tepid tempo, rallying on the outside with a fast, sustained run. The Fontainebleau went in a slightly faster final time, 1:38.16 over good-to-soft ground compared to 1:38.58 in the Grotte. But no one finished faster Sunday than Rosacea, who got her final 200 meters in 11.27 seconds and her final 400 meters in a sparkling 21.84, according to tracking data provided by France-Galop. Daisy Maisy, who raced prominently, was the only filly at all close to Rosacea, with second betting choice Mangoustine 1 1/4 lengths farther behind in third. Raclette, the odds-on favorite for Juddmonte and trainer Andre Fabre, never came close to getting involved and checked in eighth.  :: Take your handicapping to the next level and play like a pro with free Formulator, DRF's premium data product Trained by Stephane Wattel, Rosacea is a daughter of Soldier Hollow and Retizane, by Zamindar. Since finishing fifth of 13 in her career debut, Rosacea has gone 4-4, winning the Group 3 Prix des Reservoirs at Deauville to cap her 2-year-old campaign before stylishly launching her 3-year-old season Sunday. Rosacea appears to be a “hold-up” horse taken back to make one run, but she has demonstrated versatility in course conditions having won the Reservoirs over heavy going last fall. She’ll surely be a candidate for the Prix d’Essai des Pouliches, the French 1000 Guineas, on May 15.  Welwal had been second to Junko racing nine furlongs over Chantilly’s Polytrack on March 22 and evidently benefitted from the cutback to one mile Sunday. Getting a good, clean stalking trip under Cristian Demuro, Welwal came between horses to challenge for the lead with about 300 meters left in the Fontainebleu. Welwal could not put away pacepressing Mathletic, who battled him to the wire before succumbing by a neck. Making Moovies was third as 17-10 favorite Ancient Rome, trained by Fabre for Coolmore connections, was a disappointing sixth. Welwal went his final 200 meters in 11.59 and got the last 400 meters in 22.32. Trained by Jean-Claude Roget for Al Shaqab Racing, Welwal, now with a record of 5-3-2-0, is by Shalaa out of Cheriearch, by Arch.  Junko remained unbeaten after three starts but really had to work in the Noaille to take the measure of second-choice Maximus in a race that failed to really catch the eye. After winning his first two races on all-weather surfaces, Junko did fine on grass, though stamina, rather than speed, clearly is his long suit. Trained by Fabre, Junko, a Wertheimer Brothers homebred by Intello out of the Dynaformer mare Lady Luzu, was ridden by Maxime Guyon.  Perfect Power prevails in Greenham   Saturday at Newbury Racecourse in England, Perfect Power won for the fifth time in seven starts while showing he can adequately run seven furlongs in winning the Group 3 Greenham Stakes by 1 1/2 lengths over Lusail.   A top six-furlong European 2-year-old of 2021, Perfect Power stalked the pace under Christophe Soumillon, challenged for the lead with about a furlong to run, and pulled away late in the Greenham, his first start beyond three-quarters of a mile.   Saturday’s success opens the door for Perfect Power to start in a 2000 Guineas race, though trainer Richard Fahey in post-race comments said connections would take their time deciding to point to the English or French version of the race. The English 2000 Guineas is run over a straight mile with an uphill finish at Newmarket and is considered a greater test of stamina than the French 2000 Guineas, run over a flat course around a turn.   Perfect Power, who won the Group 1 Prix Morny in France and the Group 1 Middle Park in England last year, is by Ardad out of Sagely, by Frozen Power.
