Europe: Alpinista finds success in Germany again, wins Preis von Europa
Alpinista made her second successful ship this season from England to Germany, winning the Group 1 Preis von Europa on Sunday at Cologne.
On Aug. 26, Alpinista beat Germany’s leading older horse, Torquator Tasso, in the Group 1 Grosser Preis von Berlin and on Sunday she took the measure of Germany’s top 3-year-old, Sisphahan, who could finish only third as Alpinista came home 1 1/4 lengths in front of runner-up Nerium.

Favored under jockey Luke Morris, Alpinista tracked pacesetting Nerium, collared him at about the furlong grounds, and went on to a decisive victory, her fourth win from as many starts (all at 1 1/2 miles) during 2021. Trained by Mark Prescott, Alpinista, a 4-year-old daughter of Frankel and Alwilda, by Hernando, Alpinista could race again next month in the British Champions Fillies and Mares Stakes.
*** Godolphin and trainer Charlie Appleby will start a second 3-year-old, Hurricane Lane, in the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe next Sunday at Longchamp. Owner and trainer already have a leading contender for the Arc, Derby-winning Adayar, who will be ridden next weekend by William Buick. James Doyle has the mount on Hurricane Lane, third in the Derby and since a winner of three Group 1s – the Irish Derby, the Grand Prix de Paris, and the St. Leger.
