Eugene's Third Son sidelined

Marty McGee|Apr 15, 2003

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Eugene's Third Son, the runner-up to Sir Cherokee in the Arkansas Derby last weekend, underwent surgery Monday to remove the fractured splint bone from his right foreleg and will be out of training for the next month, said trainer Pat Byrne.

Byrne said Eugene's Third Son will be confined to a stall for about two weeks. "He should be ready to go back into light training after 30 days," said Byrne. "Hopefully we'll have him ready to roll for the King's Bishop" in August at Saratoga.

Eugene's Third Son was not under serious consideration for the Kentucky Derby, but Byrne had been thinking about the Preakness. "He's done with two turns," said Byrne. "We're turning him into a miler."
