OZONE PARK, N.Y. - The last time European jockey Jamie Spencer was at Aqueduct before Saturday he left the track in an ambulance. Saturday was a much more pleasant experience. On Saturday, Spencer guided England invader Eternal Hope from last to first to win the Grade 3, $350,000 Jockey Club Oaks Invitational by a neck over upset-minded Neecie Marie. It was one length back to Speirling Beag in third. Highland Grace was fourth, followed by Quarrel, ambitious pacesetting Stephanie’s Charm and Last Call. The win gave European-based runners a sweep of New York’s Turf Triple for 3-year-old fillies. Aspen Grove won the Grade 1 Belmont Oaks in July and Elusive Princess captured the Grade 3 Saratoga Oaks last month. Though Eternal Hope had not yet won a group stakes, she was a deserving even-money favorite based on the company she had kept in Europe. Jannah Rose and Lumiere Rock, the two horses she finished behind in the Group 2 Alec Head at Deauville in August, had better form than the competition in the Jockey Club Oaks. :: Bet with the Best! Still, the task Saturday became a bit more challenging when Eternal Hope broke poorly and was last while Stephanie’s Charm, under Junior Alvarado, sprinted to a double-digit-length lead early on. Spencer said his plan was to be up close, stalking whoever would be the speed. Spencer said that when an assistant starter got in the stall of Speirling Beag - the horse drawn outside of his filly - Eternal Hope got distracted. “She was looking at him rather than when the gates opened and missed a beat,” Spencer said. “I was dealt a different hand straight away.” When 52-1 shot Stephanie’s Charm shot out to a 15-length lead after three running quarters in 1:13.32, Eternal Hope was last, 25 lengths off the pace. Spencer said he wasn’t too worried. “I was always only two or three lengths off the ones I wanted to be close to anyway,” he said. Going into the far turn, Spencer asked Eternal Hope to run but he said she was struggling a bit with the turn and the firm ground. Still last turning for home, Eternal Hope got on track when straightened away in the final three-sixteenths and outfinished Neecie Marie, who had a ground-saving trip and split horses under Abner Adorno. “She struggled a lot from the three-eighths to the straight,” Spencer said. “Once I straightened her up and she was able to get balanced then she surged on.” Eternal Hope, a daughter of Teofilo owned and bred by Godolphin and trained by Charlie Appleby, covered the 1 3/8 miles in 2:16.47 and returned $4 as the even-money choice. “It’s a difficult track, there’s not a track in Europe as tight as this,” Spencer said. “And it was really fast ground, it’s a speed test. I think you can upgrade her performance.” Spencer said the last time he was at Aqueduct was November 2004 when he was working for trainer Todd Pletcher.  He got kicked in the paddock by a horse he was supposed to ride, Bandini, and wound up having to go to the hospital. “Internal bleeding or something,” Spencer said. “Didn’t die anyway. This is a bit more pleasant.” :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering? Check out DRF's Handicapping 101 and Wagering 101 pages.
