Joanies Bella, winner of the Grade 3 Arlington-Washington Lassie and the $100,000 Bassinet Stakes at River Downs in 2001, died of colic at the Rood and Riddle Equine Hospital in Lexington, Ky., on Tuesday, four weeks after foaling a filly by Pleasantly Perfect, according to her owner, Dan Martin. Joanies Bella, who still holds the 4 1/2-furlong track record of 51.80 seconds at Hawthorne, was voted the champion Ohio-bred 2-year-old filly of 2001 and concluded her career with five stakes wins and earnings of $274,265. . . . Lone Star Park on Thursday held the first of three scheduled days of training races, which are planned to accommodate north Texas-based horses that need to fulfill requirements some jurisdictions have in order to race. Training races will also be held on March 2 and March 16, with half-mile Thoroughbred races held first, followed by 200-yard Quarter Horse races.
