Leroy Foster, one of the first African-American horsemen on the New York racing circuit, died Saturday at age 77 after a bout with cancer. Foster, who was champion owner in Barbados in 1991, had several stakes-placed runners. . . . Trainer Neil Howard had his 1,000th career winner Wednesday when Soul Search ($3.40) won the seventh race at Keeneland. Howard, 56, was presented a silver julep cup in the winner's circle. . . . Owners Bobby and Leslie Hurley, in conjunction with Jack Goldthorpe of the Lexington-based Waterville Insurance and Bloodstock Services, have donated a season to Songandaprayer to benefit Gulf Coast hurricane relief.
