Royal Regalia shattered Woodbine's course record for a mile on grass when he won Thursday's second race, a $100,000 optional claimer, in 1:31.84, missing Elusive Quality's North American record by 0.21 seconds. The previous Woodbine record of 1:32.79 was set by Numerous Times in the 2001 Atto Mile. . . . Jim Gagliano, an official with Magna Entertainment Corp., has been appointed the executive vice president for Maryland racing operations at Laurel Park and Pimlico Race Course, both co-owned by Magna. Gagliano will be responsible for the day-to-day operations of both tracks, according to Joe De Francis, president of the tracks. . . . Shares of Churchill Downs Inc. fell 5.5 percent, to $38.66, in Thursday trading after the company cut its profit projection for the year. Late Wednesday, Churchill said that for 2004 it now expects to earn 10 to 15 percent less than the $1.70 per share it had forecast in May, a revision attributed by Churchill's CEO, Tom Meeker, to "significant investments" in efforts to enter the racino business. . . . Thistledown will raise purses 7 percent on $10,000 and higher claiming races, effective Monday, and 5 percent on those races under $10,000. The increase comes in the wake of increased field size and export handle on the Thistledown signal, as well as record-breaking Triple Crown and Ohio Derby days.
