Jockey Guy Smith won the 1,000th race of his career Saturday on Canadian River ($6) in the ninth at Delta Downs in Vinton, La. Smith is the third-leading rider at Delta. . . . Jockey Dan Beck tore an achilles tendon in a training accident at Fonner Park on Saturday and will be out indefinitely. . . . Trainer Andre Fabre's hopes for the European classic season have been dealt a heavy blow, as two of his leading 3-year-olds have been felled by injury. Apsis, Fabre's undefeated winner of the Group 3 Prix Thomas Bryon at Saint-Cloud in October, has suffered an unspecified setback and is unlikely to return to the races until midsummer, and Charming Prince, runner-up in the Group 3 Prix La Rochette, has died after rearing over and breaking his back. . . . Horses began arriving Monday at the Woodbine backstretch, whose opening was pushed back to March 1 this year to accommodate renovations on seven barns, including the addition of sprinklers, which also were installed in more than 20 other barns. The projects, which also included renovation of the race office building, led to Woodbine delaying the opening of its 167-day meeting to April 17.
