DRF Staff|Jan 24, 2003

The first North American foal by Point Given, the 2001 Horse of the Year, was born on Jan. 19 at Edition Farm North in Hyde Park, N.Y. The colt is out of a daughter of Broad Brush, Carly Lee. . . . Barney Willis, a northern California-based trainer best known for developing stakes winners Raise Your Skirts and Doonesbury, died Jan. 14 at age 84. Willis, once a nationally ranked sprinter at the University of Southern California, was also a member of the Rodeo Hall of Fame. . . . John McKee, a finalist for the Eclipse Award for top apprentice, was taken to the hospital for a CAT scan after his mount, Pelican Pete, clipped heels and unseated the rider in Friday's third race at Aqueduct. X-rays were negative, but McKee, who walked off the track after the spill, was not expected to ride on Saturday. . . . Jockey Richard Migliore, a fixture on the New York Racing Association circuit, will receive the Thurman Munson Award from the Association for the Help of Retarded Children at the group's awards dinner on Feb. 4 at the Marriott Marquis Hotel in New York City. Migliore will be cited for his outstanding performances as a rider and for his philanthropic work within the community. . . . Frank G. Gabriel Jr., who was named executive vice president of racing operations for Arlington Park in November, will also be Arlington's racing secretary for 2003. Gabriel replaces Dave Bailey, who has taken a year-round position with Gulfstream Park. . . . Sam Houston Race Park in Houston will hold a $10,000 handicapping contest on Feb. 8 that combines the track's live program with simulcast races from Oaklawn Park and Santa Anita. The entry fee is $100, and the top 15 finishers in the contest will receive cash prizes from $5,000 down to $100 . . . . Philadelphia Park canceled Friday's live racing program because of extremely cold weather.
