Little Bold John, whose 26 stakes victories are a record for a Maryland-bred, died Tuesday at Weston Farm in Upper Marlboro, Md., at age 21. Among Little Bold John's 38 wins in 105 starts were the Grade 1 Donn Handicap and the Maryland Million Classic in 1987. . . . William Bancroft, who campaigned horses including Highland Blade with his brother Thomas Bancroft Jr., died Jan. 18 at age 71, The Blood-Horse reported on its website. William Bancroft, a grandson of William Woodward Sr., chairman of The Jockey Club from 1930 to 1950, had served as a member of The Jockey Club and a vice president of the Thoroughbred Owners and Breeders Association. . . . John Shoemaker, who trained horses for more than 50 years in Florida and the Midwest, died Tuesday at age 90. A memorial service was scheduled at the Holloway Funeral Home on Bayview Blvd in Oldsmar, Fla., at 6 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 27. . . . Tampa Bay Downs will raise overnight purses by 6 percent, to $100,500 daily, effective Jan. 30. A Tampa Bay spokesman attributed the raise to a 22 percent increase in simulcast handle on the track's live racing. . . . Lion Tamer, an allowance winner at Gulfstream Park, has been sold by John Fort's Peachtree Stable to Michael Tabor for an undisclosed price. Todd Pletcher, who will continue to train Lion Tamer, said he is considering both the Hutcheson Stakes and the Fountain of Youth, both on Feb. 15, for Lion Tamer. . . . Penn National Race Course canceled its Wednesday live racing program after two races because of extremely cold weather and also called off Thursday night's card. Charles Town and Turfway Park also canceled their Thursday cards because of inclement weather.
