Jockey Patti Cooksey will be honored Nov. 2 in Washington with the Lombardi Symbol of Courage Award, given annually to a sports figure who displays the inspirational qualities of the late football coach Vince Lombardi in his or her battle with cancer. Cooksey, whose 2,120 career victories are second only to Julie Krone among female riders in North America, underwent a mastectomy nearly 13 months ago. . . . The colt, out of the Foolish Pleasure mare Thanks Pal, sold for $97,000 to Kathleen Willier. . . . Because of Hurricane Lili, all Finish Line offtrack betting parlors in southeast Louisiana were to be closed Thursday. It is the second time in less than 10 days that a tropical weather system has forced the Finish Line OTB's to close. . . . Churchill Downs on Wednesday unveiled the official logo for the 129th Kentucky Derby, which will be run May 3. The three-color, diamond-shaped logo depicts a horse and jockey bursting forward against a black-and-white background. The logo was released in conjunction with several related promotions, including a sweepstakes that offers a trip for four to the 2003 Derby.
