A pair of Sunday Silence colts brought seven figures as the most expensive lots at Monday's opening session of the Japan Racing Horse Association's two-day select foal sale in Hokkaido. Monday's top lot was a $1,700,000 Sunday Silence colt out of the Grade 3-winning Law Society mare Fanjica, and the day's other seven-figure foal was a Sunday Silence out of the Sadler's Wells winner Catalyst that sold for $1,125,000. . . . . Joe Petersen, 35, a three-time leading jockey at Delaware Park in the 1980's, has retired from racing. In his last race Saturday at Delaware, he finished fourth aboard Sey Mag Poof in the Juvenile Stakes. . . . Ernie Lowe Jr., who served as director of the New England Horsemen's Benevolent and Protective Association and trained regional champions after 20 years as a police officer, died Thursday of heart failure at age 63. Funeral services were to be held on Tuesday.
