The National Turf Writers Association has selected longtime trainer Larry Jones, for its Mr. Fitz Award, which is presented annually for "typifying the spirit of racing," according to a news release from the organization. The turf writers also selected Oak Tree Racing Association founding member and longtime practicing veterinarian Dr. Jack Robbins for its Joe Palmer Award and international journalist Dan Farley for its Walter Haight Award. . . . The state of Delaware has appealed a ruling by the U.S. Appeals Court for the Third District that a plan to offer betting on single sports games at racetracks was illegal. Under the ruling, single-game betting was declared illegal, though betting on parlays of three games or more began Sept. 10. . . . Brian Cheyne , riding in just his fourth career race, guided Bubba Luke ($13.60) to victory at Fort Erie on Monday afternoon. Cheyne, a 20-year-old native of Fort Erie, had ridden two races Sunday and one Monday before Bubba Luke's success in race 4.
