Portland Meadows has renamed the Columbia River Stakes in honor of Dennis Dodge, the longtime Daily Racing Form correspondent and handicapper who died Sept. 9 at 62. The Dennis Dodge Memorial Stakes, for 2-year-olds at six furlongs, will be run Nov. 16. . . . King of the Roxy has been retired from racing. Owner Team Valor hasn't established stud plans for the 4-year-old King of the Roxy, who won the Grade 2 Futurity and Grade 2 Hutcheson stakes and earned $536,734. . . . Laurel Park's annual event for the offspring of Maryland stallions is expected to be renamed Jim McKay Maryland Million Day in 2009. A Jim McKay trophy will also be awarded to winner of the Maryland Million Classic, honoring the founder of the event who died in June. . . . Lear Fan, the 27-year-old sire of such champions as Ryafan and Windsharp, died of natural causes on July 7 at Gainesway Farm in Lexington, Ky., the farm announced Wednesday. Lear Fan's champion progeny also included Sikeston and Chopinina, and he was a top five North American sire in 2002 with Grade 1 winners Dublino and Sarafan. . . . Jockey Horacio Karamanos said he will be leaving Laurel Park after next Saturday's Maryland Million Day to take care of what he termed "a family situation" in his native Argentina. Karamanos, 35, will ride at San Isidro Racecourse in Buenos Aires for the next several months and intends to return to Maryland next spring.
