Travis Dunkelberger, the third-leading rider in the country last year, will begin riding on a first-call basis for owner Richard Englander and trainer Scott Lake at Aqueduct on Wednesday. . . . Fair Grounds Race Course will cut purses between $1,000 and $2,000 per race beginning Feb. 7. Track president Bryan Krantz attributes the cut to a weakened national economy and poor weather on key racing days. . . . Apprentice jockey Nelson Arroyo was thrown from his mount, Windhall, in the first race at Suffolk Downs Saturday after the horse had a fatal heart attack. Arroyo is expected to be sidelined for a week to 10 days after experiencing back and neck pain. . . . Retired Hall of Fame jockey Steve Cauthen had his first winner as an owner Friday when Regal Event won the first race at Turfway Park. Regal Event, a 3-year-old Regal Classic colt owned in partnership by Cauthen's Dreamfields Farm, won a $7,500 maiden-claiming race by 10 lengths.
