U.S. District Judge William Bertelsman on Tuesday postponed a bond hearing for three lawyers who are accused of defrauding hundreds of plaintiffs in a 2002 settlement with the maker of the diet-drug combination phen-fen, sending the case to the U.S. 6th Circuit Court of Appeals instead. Last week, Bertelsman jailed the three lawyers - two of whom own a part-interest in Preakness Stakes winner Curlin - as a result of the postponement of their criminal trial, and attorneys for the lawyers had appealed the decision in the hopes of posting bond until the criminal trial began. . . . Chick Lang, the former longtime general manager at Pimlico Race Course, has been named a senior racing adviser at Kentucky Downs, the turf-only track in Franklin, Ky. Kentucky Downs was recently purchased by a partnership headed by Corey Johnsen, who worked closely with Lang during Johnsen's many years as a track executive in Texas.
