Jose Olivares, a former jockey and member of the Oriental Park Hall of Fame at Calder Race Course, died Wednesday night at his home in Tampa, Fla., at age 65. Olivares, the older brother of Calder-based trainer Luis Olivares, was the dominant rider at Finger Lakes through much of the 1960's before being paralyzed in a spill there in 1970. . . . The Ocala Breeders' Sales Company's Jan. 17-20 winter mixed sale opened Wednesday in Ocala, Fla., with a $170,000 session-topper: Tadwiga, a 12-year-old Fairy King-Euromill mare, the dam of graded winner Rock Lobster and in foal to Consolidator, who sold to Eugenio Colombo, agent, from the Summerfield consignment. The session sold 75 horses for $2,542,500, down from last year, when 175 horses sold for $3,441,900, with the 2007 average price rising 72 percent to $33,900 and the median more than doubling, from $10,000 to $21,000. . . . Trainer Murray Rojas saddled five winners from eight starters on the nine-race program at Penn National on Tuesday night. . . . Mike Miller, the chief financial officer of Churchill Downs Inc. since 2002, has resigned to become CFO of Poe Companies, a commercial real-estate development company in Louisville, Ky., effective Jan. 26. Miller's resignation comes six weeks after Churchill eliminated the positions of 22 front-office employees, including chief operating officer Andrew Skehan.
