ELMONT, N.Y – Yes, Estilo Talentoso does have talent, and she won the Grade 3, $200,000 Bed o’ Roses with style on Friday at stormy Belmont Park. The Bed o’ Roses was delayed nearly an hour by severe storms that blew through shortly after the horses arrived in the paddock. The fillies and mares kept their cool and Estilo Talentoso kept up a hot streak that began in April at Keeneland, where she finished second at 50-1 in the Grade 1 Madison Stakes. :: Bet the races with confidence on DRF Bets. That performance had roused the interest of Medallion Racing, an arm of Taylor Made Farm headed by Phillip Shelton, who, after Estilo Talentoso finished third May 1 in the Grade 1 Derby City Distaff, coordinated the filly’s purchase by a partnership that includes Barry Fowler, Parkland Thoroughbreds, Little Red Feather Racing, and Black Rock Racing. “She ran big against Gamine in the Derby City Distaff, and we basically bought into her right after that,” Shelton said. “We loved her today but just weren’t sure how the delay was going to work.” The new owners decided to leave Estilo Talentoso with 43-year-old trainer Juan Arriagada, who had developed her from the start. Peruvian native Arriagada, based at Delware Park with 20 horses, 17 of which he owns himself, is a third-generation horsemen who still gallops his own stock during morning training. “The very first day I got on her, I told my wife, ‘This filly is amazing.’ Thank God I wasn’t wrong,” he said. Chub Wagon, the likely favorite, was scratched earlier Friday because of wet conditions, according to trainer Guadalupe Preciado, and Piedi Bianchi was an early scratch after racing Thursday in the Intercontinental Stakes. That left a field of six, with 9-5 favorite Victim of Love speeding off to the lead, though unable to shake pace-pressing Pacific Gale through an opening quarter in 22.90 and a half in 45.87. Javier Castellano, riding Estilo Talentoso for the second time, bided his time, rating his mount in fifth down the backstretch, moving up mildly around the turn. Castellano asked for more approaching the homestretch and got a quick, positive answer. “When I ask her, she responded right away and she finished very well,” Castellano said. Victim of Love, gassed at the three-sixteenths pole, faded out of the frame, but Lake Avenue burst through an opening along the rail and held a one-length lead at the furlong grounds. Castellano said he’d spied puddling along the inside part of the track, and Lake Avenue, who’d broken from post 1, was stuck on the soupier portion of the surface. Estilo Talentoso, coming wide, had her measured the last 200 yards and was home by a neck, stopping the timer in 1:22.96 for seven furlongs. Bayerness finished third and was followed by Pacific Gale, Victim of Love, and Alandra. The winner paid $7.40. Estilo Talentoso is by Maclean’s Music out of Bazinga Baby, by Afleet Alex, and notched a third victor from 13 starts to go with eight second-place finishes. Arriagada scored his first graded stakes win in his fifth year as a trainer. The large, boisterous group of new owners hooted and hollered their way out of the Belmont winner’s circle, from which Arriagada had beaten a hasty retreat to accompany his filly to the Belmont test barn.
