HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. – There are nine 3-year-olds Florida-breds entered to go seven furlongs in Sunday’s eighth race at Gulfstream Park, although the main focus will be on only two, Entendre and Celtic Pride. The pair will meet for a second time in the last of three allowance events on a nine-race card that kicks off at 1:10 p.m. Entendre came out second best when squaring off against Celtic Pride for the first time 2 1/2 months ago as maidens, finishing fourth nearly four lengths behind that rival in a 5 1/2-furlong race. But the homebred son of Awesome of Course has improved dramatically since that encounter, winning his maiden with a 93 Beyer Speed Figure five weeks later before finishing second, beaten just a half-length by General Ledger, when attempting to stay seven panels for the first time on April 28. He regressed just three points on the Beyer scale off his previous start despite facing tougher competition and being asked to negotiate added ground. Celtic Pride has moved forward remarkably fast himself following a disappointing career debut over a sloppy track here last summer. He finished second when returning from a six-month layoff in his 2024 debut before registering a hard-fought and very game neck decision in a maiden victory March 1, a performance for which he earned a 91 Beyer Figure. :: Subscribe to the DRF Post Time Email Newsletter: Get the news you need to play today's races!  Celtic Pride was freshened after that grueling effort and has recorded four works preparing for his return. His ability to handle the stretch to seven furlongs for the first time perhaps is the key to his success on Sunday. Those looking for options to side against the two likely favorites might try Raging Fury or Jigsaw, two of only three multiple winners in the lineup. Raging Fury is looking to return quick dividends for new connections off the claim following a one-sided and relatively well-graded $35,000 conditioned-claiming win. Jigsaw is hoping to bounce back from a disappointing effort under similar conditions last month. The co-featured second and seventh races both offer a purse of $61,000 and are carded on the turf, weather permitting. Race 2 is for older fillies and mares at 1 1/16 miles while race 7 is restricted to 3-year-old fillies and carded for 7 1/2 furlongs. Swoonatra will likely be favored in race 2 while returning locally for the first time since winning a mid-level starter race on Tapeta last October. She figures to face plenty of pace pressure from the rail-drawn Ornela, which could give stretch runners No Valla and Ipanema Princess a chance to register the upset. Trainer Mark Casse will send out top contenders Gild the Lily and Boomin’ Belle in the seventh race against seven rivals, including last-out maiden winners Majestic Venezuela, Lady Max, and In Our Time. Bluefield fights for the win Bluefield had to work much harder than expected before ultimately proving a very popular winner of Thursday’s headliner for older fillies and mares. She withstood a stretch-long duel with determined pacesetter Cousin Kristi before eking out a hard-fought neck decision as a 2-5 favorite for her first win since the City of Ocala Stakes at Tampa Bay Downs on Dec. 9. The win capped off a big afternoon for the team of Saffie Joseph Jr. and Edgard Zayas, who combined to win three straight races and pad their respective leads atop the trainer and jockey standings at the Royal Palm meet. Joseph said he wasn’t overly concerned about the ultimate outcome despite watching his filly going head-to-head with Cousin Kristi in the run down the stretch. :: Bet the races with a $200 First Deposit Match + FREE All Access PPs! I thought she was fit enough to win coming off the layoff and she got the job done.” Joseph said he plans to keep Bluefield home the rest of the year and ultimately point her for another run at the Grade 3 Princess Rooney during the fall. Bluefield finished fourth, beaten 4 3/4 lengths by stablemate Three Witches, in the 2023 Princess Rooney, which is a Win and You’re In for the Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Sprint. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering?
