Enola Gray sparkles in work

CYPRESS, Calif. – Enola Gray zoomed through a five-furlong workout in 59.20 seconds at Los Alamitos on Monday, indicating to trainer Phil D’Amato that she has recovered from an illness that prevented her from starting at Del Mar in August.
D’Amato timed Enola Gray in 58.80 seconds for the workout under jockey Tyler Baze. He said she is on schedule for Saturday’s $75,000 Beverly Lewis Stakes for 3-year-old fillies at six furlongs at Los Alamitos.
“She did it like she always does – it looks like she’s galloping,” D’Amato said. “She cooled out nicely. Tyler had a big, giant grin on his face when he came back.”
Owned by breeder Nick Alexander, Enola Gray was the morning-line favorite for the Torrey Pines Stakes at Del Mar on Aug. 28 but was scratched on the morning of the race after showing signs of mucus.
Enola Gray, by Grazen, is unbeaten in three starts, including two stakes for California-breds – the Melair Stakes at Santa Anita in May and the Fleet Treat Stakes at Del Mar in July. The Beverly Lewis Stakes will be her first start in open company.
The list of candidates includes Bendable, Jade Princess, and Uptown Twirl, the winner of the Surfside Stakes at Los Alamitos in April.
