ARCADIA, Calif.- The five stakes winners on Saturday’s California Gold Rush Day program at Santa Anita ranged from an unbeaten 3-year-old filly with seemingly unlimited potential to veteran older horses who won their first stakes. The 3-year-old winners Enola Gray and Gold Rush Dancer may run in graded stakes at Del Mar this summer, while the older horses Ambitious Brew, Avanti Bello, and Bert’s Melody could run in graded stakes or statebred races. Enola Gray is unbeaten in two starts after winning her stakes debut in the $192,000 Melair Stakes for 3-year-old fillies at 1 1/16 miles by 2 1/4 lengths. Enola Gray ($2.20) led throughout the race and won despite losing a front shoe at the start, trainer Phil D’Amato said. “I didn’t know it until she stepped out of the winner’s circle,” D’Amato said on Sunday. “I’m even more proud of her.” D’Amato said there are two races for 3-year-old fillies at Del Mar for Enola Gray – the $150,000 Fleet Treat Stakes for California-breds at seven furlongs on July 22, and the $100,000 Torrey Pines Stakes on Aug. 28, a Grade 3 race at a mile. Enola Gray, by Grazen, is owned by her breeder, Nick Alexander. “I’ll take it day-by-day with her,” D’Amato said. “She’s still kind of growing into it. I think the nice progression of the Cal-bred races is good for now and then open company after that.” Gold Rush Dancer, who won his second consecutive turf stakes in the $188,000 Snow Chief Stakes at 1 1/8 miles, will have his first start in a graded stakes at Del Mar, trainer Vann Belvoir said. Races such as the $150,000 La Jolla Handicap, a Grade 3 at 1 1/16 miles on Aug. 6, and the $250,000 Del Mar Derby, a Grade 2 at 1 1/8 miles on Sept. 4, will be considered. Owned by breeder John Parker of Washington state, Gold Rush Dancer, who is by Private Gold, won the Silky Sullivan Stakes at Golden Gate Fields on May 1. In the Snow Chief Stakes, Gold Rush Dancer finished a head in front of Ralis, the winner of the Grade 1 Hopeful Stakes at Saratoga last September. The style of Gold Rush Dancer’s win left Belvoir impressed. “He really had to lay it down,” Belvoir said. “When the other horse came up, he went with him. He’s got some potential.” Ralis is winless in six starts since the Hopeful. Trainer Doug O’Neill said the $100,000 Oceanside Stakes for 3-year-olds, a restricted race at a mile on turf at Del Mar on July 15, is the next goal for Ralis. The O’Neill-trained Avanti Bello won his first stakes in the $150,690 Tiznow, closing from third to win by a nose in a 13-1 upset. Avanti Bello earned a career-high Beyer Speed Figure of 100 in his 13th start. “I think it was his career-best race on numbers and gutsiness,” O’Neill said. Avanti Bello is owned by a partnership that includes Pablo Suarez, Steven Keh, and Wonderland Racing Stable. O’Neill said he does not have a race goal in mind for Avanti Bello, a 4-year-old colt by Include. He did not rule out a start in the $500,000 Gold Cup at Santa Anita on July 25. The Grade 1 Gold Cup is the top race for older horses at the spring-summer meeting. Bert’s Melody won her first stakes in the $126,035 Fran’s Valentine for fillies and mares at a mile on turf. Bert’s Melody, a 5-year-old mare by Bertrando, was the 9-5 favorite and raced near the front before winning by a length. Owned by breeder John Barr, Bert’s Melody will be pointed for the $150,000 Solana Beach Stakes for California-bred fillies and mares at a mile on turf on Aug. 14, trainer Sean McCarthy said. “That’s a ways off,” McCarthy said. “She’s in good form. We’ll stay home and I might run in an allowance.” McCarthy said he was encouraged that Bert’s Melody was patient for jockey Brice Blanc in the first half of the race. “I was happy to see the way she did settle,” he said. “Brice didn’t have to fight her. I expected her to run well, but I didn’t expect her to be favored.” Ambitious Brew began the 11-race program with his third career stakes win in the $100,000 Lennyfromalibu Stakes on the hillside turf course. Owned by breeder Pamela Ziebarth and trained by Marty Jones, Ambitious Brew, a 6-year-old gelding by Tizbud, led throughout the Lennyfromalibu, which drew only five runners. Saturday’s race was Ambitious Brew’s first start since October. Jones said on Sunday that Ambitious Brew “looked good out of the race,” but that he does not have a race goal in mind. It is interesting to note that Ambitious Brew was seventh in the Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint here in November 2014. The same race will be run here this November.
