ETOBICOKE, Ontario – There are four King’s Plate nominees in Friday’s eighth race at Woodbine, including Enjoythesilent, who should be favored under Kazushi Kimura in the nonwinners-of-two route that combines Ontario-sired allowance stock and $40,000 claimers. Enjoythesilent was a non-threatening fifth in a maiden special turf sprint in his only 2-year-old outing last July. Coming off the sidelines in a seven-furlong maiden sprint on May 28, he closed strongly on the outside from off a slow pace to win going away by 5 1/4 lengths with a 77 Beyer Speed Figure. Trainer Kevin Attard said Enjoythesilent turned things around after he was gelded during the offseason. “He’s just a different horse this year compared to his 2-year-old season, now that he’s a gelding,” Attard explained. “He’s more athletic-looking and more focused on his job. He trained well going into his [season debut]. We were expecting a good performance and he came up with it.” Attard said he hopes to make the Aug. 20 Plate with the son of Silent Name, who’s owned by Lanni Bloodstock and Daniel Plouf. :: Get ready for summer racing with a DRF Formulator Quarterly PP plan “I’m looking forward to seeing him stretch out,” Attard said. “I don’t think that’s going to be a problem. He’s bred to do it.” The other nominees to the $1 million Plate in the race are Rapid Test, El Cohete, and Smart Sky. Rapid Test put away the other speed before holding on to land his 5 1/2-furlong debut with a 78 Beyer on May 13. He finished up the course on his left lead when favored in a subsequent main turf sprint. With the addition of Lasix, Rapid Test is moving out in distance to 1 1/16 miles with a blend of speed and stamina in his pedigree. Declan Carroll inherits the mount from Kimura on the son of Souper Speedy, who’s trained by Catherine Day Phillips. El Cohete is also experimenting over a route of ground. He showed speed in both of his outings, finishing a sagging fifth at first asking May 13 in a key maiden special on the Tapeta. He took to the turf like a duck to water most recently when landing a 6 1/2-furlong race over a main course labeled good. Rafael Hernandez will ride him again for trainer Ross Armata Jr. Longshot Smart Sky was in decent Tapeta form before a double-digit loss on the inner turf June 15. Sir Samuel is returning from a layoff as a new gelding. He rallied wide for second against $20,000 conditioned rivals when claimed in his last start on the Gulfstream Park grass in March. Trainer Donnie MacRae has good numbers off the claim and has lured a hot Patrick Husband to ride the 4-year-old. Giant One could vie for the early lead with El Cohete and Smart Sky. He prevailed in a front-end battle before losing a heartbreaker against $25,000 non-winners of two opposition in his improved second start off the bench. Rounding out the field are Give Me My Money and Nonno’s Little Boy. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering? Check out DRF's Handicapping 101 and Wagering 101 pages.
