English Channel relocates to Calumet

DRF Breeding Staff|Aug 19, 2014

Turf champion English Channel has relocated to continue his stud career at Brad Kelley’s Calumet Farm near Lexington, Ky. He most recently stood at Lane’s End Farm in Versailles, Ky.

The 12-year-old Smart Strike horse is listed at $25,000 on Calumet’s website, maintaining his advertised 2014 fee from Lane’s End.

English Channel won 13 of 23 career starts – including six Grade 1 events – for earnings of $5,319,028. He romped by seven lengths in the 2007 Breeders' Cup Turf at Monmouth Park to secure his divisional Eclipse Award, establishing a course record for 1 1/2 miles in the process.

He won two editions of the United Nations Stakes at Monmouth – setting and then lowering his own course record for 1 3/8 miles – and also won two editions of the Joe Hirsch Turf Classic Invitational at Belmont.

English Channel was campaigned throughout his career by James Scatuorchio, who purchased him for $50,000 as a yearling. Kelley bought into the horse and originally stood him at Hurricane Hall Farm near Lexington, Ky., a property Kelley owned with partners. Kelley bought the land outright in 2009 – with the rest of the stallion operation relocating to former Hurricane Hall partner Ben Walden’s Pauls Mill Farm – and English Channel moved to stand alongside sire Smart Strike at Lane’s End beginning in 2010.

Kelley purchased the historic Calumet Farm property in 2012 and has launched his own stallion operation at the facility. English Channel becomes the seventh stallion listed on the farm’s roster for 2015.

English Channel is the sire of 126 winners from 203 starters for total progeny earnings of more than $12.7 million through Aug. 18. His top runners include Queen's Plate winner and Canadian champion Strait of Dover; Grade 2 winners Parranda, Blueskiesnrainbows, and Skyring; and multiple graded stakes winner Optimizer. His other graded stakes winners include popular Grade 3 winner The Pizza Man, who rolled in the American St. Leger last Saturday at Arlington Park.
