Englehart having big meet with 2-year-olds

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – Trainer Jeremiah Englehart seems flush with 2-year-olds, particularly fillies.
Already at this meet, he has won maiden races with the fillies Risky Mischief and Sweet Kisses. The juvenile filly My Italian Rabbi, a maiden winner at Belmont, won the Stillwater Stakes here. For good measure, the colt Cleon Jones won his maiden here July 28.
In Sunday’s first race at Saratoga, Englehart will send out another highly-regarded runner in Daphne Moon, a daughter of Cairo Prince.
Englehart flirted with the idea of running Daphne Moon as a first-time starter in Sunday’s Grade 2 Adirondack Stakes at 6 1/2 furlongs. Sunday’s maiden race is seven furlongs, and Englehart believes she’ll appreciate more distance.

“She’s not real precocious as far as speed goes,” Englehart said Friday. “She did work 48-and-2 out of the gate at Oklahoma, and that’s pretty good for that track. I’m hoping she’ll be the type of horse Jose [Ortiz] can do anything he wants with.”
Sunday’s opener drew a field of seven, including the first-time starter Lucky Dime, a half-sister to the multiple Grade 1 winner Mitole. Trainer Bill Mott also has done well with firsters, and this daughter of Creative Cause has a workout tab that dates back to mid-April.
Trainer John Terranova sends out Pure Wow, who finished a solid third in her debut. Terranova felt his filly was “going through the motions” in that race and believes she has improved from that July 12 race.
“She acts like she’s got talent,” said Terranova, who also sends out the firster Mirabell Mei.
