City of Troy showed the hype cascading around him the last three months had merit with a spectacular win Saturday in the Group 1 Dewhurst Stakes at England's Newmarket Racecourse. Making all the running under Ryan Moore while racing over a soft Newmarket course that trainer Aidan O’Brien insisted before and after the race was the wrong kind of ground for his horse, City of Troy made his 2-year-old rivals look ordinary by drawing farther and farther clear through the last furlong of the straight-course, one-mile Dewhurst. He won by 3 1/2 lengths over Alynaabi, a Group 3 winner in his last start, and not only is the strong early favorite for the 2000 Guineas over one mile next May, but also for the 1 1/2-mile Derby in June.   That is for good reason at this point. City of Troy, the overwhelming favorite Saturday. toyed with maiden rivals July 1 at The Curragh and two weeks later won the Solario Stakes over a much firmer Newmarket course by 6 1/2 lengths. City of Troy’s Solario just about hit the upper limit of what a July 2-year-old might accomplish – superstar potential. O’Brien held the colt out of the Group 1 National Stakes last month in Ireland because of a course with too much give in the ground, but the trainer said he needed to get a third start into City of Troy this year and despite unfavorable course conditions left City of Troy in the Dewhurst.  O’Brien called City of Troy a “beautiful mover” whose stride action best suits good to firm going, and if that’s true, imagine what his winning margin might have been over firmer footing on Saturday. As it was, O’Brien, who’s had Europe’s top 2-year-old several years, hailed City of Troy as the best juvenile he’s trained.   City of Troy is by Justify, and O’Brien talked about Justify’s sprint-type body being capable of winning the 1 1/2-mile Belmont Stakes, which completed a Triple Crown. City of Troy, out of the Galileo mare Together Forever, will make his next start in the Guineas. Top horses don’t even run in the third leg of England’s Triple Crown, the 1 3/4-mile St. Leger. O’Brien said City of Troy, who has ample speed, never gets tired, regardless of how he’s pushed. If he winters well, the British Classics of 2024 could be a coronation.  :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering? Check out DRF's Handicapping 101 and Wagering 101 pages.
