England: Cachet leads start to finish in 1,000 Guineas

Marcus Hersh|May 01, 2022

The jockey James Doyle never had won a Classic race before Saturday, while young trainer George Boughey hadn’t won one before Sunday, but when Cachet went wire to wire in the English 1,000 Guineas on Sunday at Newmarket it gave Doyle his second Classic and Boughey his first.

Cachet, a 16-1 chance who had been fourth last November in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies’ Turf, won the Guineas by a diminishing neck over another longshot - Prosperous Voyage. Tuesday, who took strong betting for the Guineas, finished a decent third and remains favored for the Oaks at Epsom over 1 1/2 miles. Tenebrism, Tuesday’s Aidan O’Brien-trained stablemate, finished a fading eighth as the favorite.

Doyle, whose sister, Sophie, has ridden extensively in America, had landed his first Classic the day before, piloting Coroebus to an upset over favored Native Trail, both horses running for Godophin and trainer Charlie Appleby.

Cachet, who had won her 2022 debut, broke well and made an easy lead but tired through the uphill finish as Prosperous Voyage closed ground, her rally falling just short. Cachet is by Aclaim out of Poyle Sophie, by Teofilo. Boughey mentioned a possible next start in the Group 1 Coronation Stakes at Royal Ascot.

*** State of Rest wins Ganay

Four-year-old State of Rest now has won races in four countries and three continents after capturing the Group 1 Prix Ganay by three-quarters of a length over Pretty Tiger on Sunday at Longchamp.

Sealiway finished a close third, pacesetting Mare Australis was fourth, and heavily favored Skalleti was fifth in the 1 1/8-mile fixture. Skalleti did meet with some traffic trouble in upper stretch but had time to quicken and failed to do so over good-to-soft ground likely lacking the give that he prefers.

State of Rest notched his first win in Ireland and went on last year to win the Saratoga Derby Invitational and the Cox Plate in Australia.

Under Shane Crosse, State of Rest got an outside tracking trip, making the lead with about a furlong to run and holding clear a bid from Pretty Tiger. State of Rest is by Starspangled Banner out of Repose, by Quiet American.
