Enforceable has first work since Lecomte victory

Enforceable had his first work since winning the Grade 3, $200,000 Lecomte Stakes on Jan. 18 at Fair Grounds when he breezed a half-mile under Declan Carroll in 49.80 seconds on Sunday.

Working alone, Enforceable didn’t post a flashy time (nor is he a flashy work horse), but David Carroll, assistant to trainer Mark Casse, seemed more than satisfied with the drill.

“We were looking for 50 [seconds] out of him and let him gallop out,” Carroll said. “He’s had a really good week of training, continues to train with enthusiasm. We took it easy a couple days because we had some bad weather, but there’s no pressure on us fitness-wise. I loved the way he galloped out around the turn in this work. The farther he went, the more he wanted to do. He cooled out great, ate up his breakfast, and I was delighted with him.

“He’s certainly doing as well if not better than for the Lecomte.”

Enforceable raced six times as a 2-year-old and got his second career win, first in a stakes, when he captured the Lecomte by 1 1/2 lengths over Silver State. Enforceable won his maiden race over 1 1/8 miles and ought not be troubled moving back to that distance in the Risen Star.

Meanwhile, Carroll said that Lynn’s Map is back at Fair Grounds following a somewhat disappointing fifth-place finish Jan. 24 at Oaklawn in the Smarty Jones Stakes. Lynn’s Map, who beat Lecomte third-place finisher Mr. Monomoy in a Dec. 21 allowance race, was entered in the Lecomte but was scratched after drawing post 14.

“He’s back training, but I’m not sure what we’re going to do,” Carroll said. “There’s probably not a big rush to run him back somewhere.”

By My Standards returns Sunday

There probably was some muted cheering in the Bret Calhoun barn on Monday when a second-level, dirt-route allowance race for older horses made it onto the Feb. 9 card with six entrants.

One of them is the Calhoun-trained By My Standards, who is set to make his first start since finishing a tough-trip 12th in the 2019 Kentucky Derby. By My Standards came quickly to hand late last winter at Fair Grounds, scoring a sharp maiden win before upsetting the Louisiana Derby.

By My Standards is an excellent work horse and has been tearing up the Fair Grounds track during morning exercise, posting a string of powerhouse drills. He figures to be heavily favored in Sunday’s seventh race.

◗ Who knows who even will run in Thursday’s featured fourth, an open 7 1/2-furlong allowance for Louisiana-bred females. Three horses – Hyper Piper, La Mistake, and Mr. Al’s Gal – are cross-entered to run Saturday night at Delta, while Fairwell Tax Break is entered in a different race this week at Fair Grounds.
