Empire of Gold tops allowance sprint

Empire of Gold wins an April 30 allowance at Oaklawn Park
Coady Photography Empire of Gold wins an allowance race on April 30 at Oaklawn Park.

Empire of Gold, fourth in last year’s Breeders’ Cup Sprint at 3, will be in action Sunday at Lone Star Park.

He goes in a 6 1/2-furlong money allowance for 3-year-olds and up. The race is restricted to horses who have not won $30,000 twice in 2021.

The field of six includes Grade 2 winner Favorable Outcome, five-time stakes winner Grinning Tiger, and four-time stakes winner Rowdy Yates.

Empire of Gold is based at Lone Star where last year he won two races over the main track. He went on to run second in the Grade 2 Phoenix at Keeneland before his start in the Breeders’ Cup.

Empire of Gold launched his 4-year-old season in April, finishing third behind C Z Rocket and champion Whitmore in the Grade 3 Count Fleet at Oaklawn. Empire of Gold then won an allowance at Oaklawn before shipping to Churchill Downs and finishing a troubled seventh in the $150,000 Aristides on May 29.

Empire of Gold will break from post 3 on Sunday under David Cabrera. Terry Eoff trains the horse and owns him with Johnny Evans.

Also on the card, Turquesa, a 2-year-old half-sister to millionaire Tenfold by Gun Runner, debuts for Winchell Thoroughreds and trainer Steve Asmussen.
