Emily Upjohn, who would have won the 2022 English Oaks with any luck, was a brilliant winner of the Group 1 Coronation Cup on Oaks Day 2023. And a little later Friday at Epsom, her jockey and co-trainers, Frankie Dettori and John and Thady Gosden, won the Oaks itself with Soul Sister.   A great afternoon with more, perhaps, yet to come this weekend. Dettori and the Gosdens have market-mover Arrest for the Derby on Saturday at Epsom and Epictatus on Sunday at Chantilly in the Prix du Jockey Club, France’s Derby.   Dettori, who plans to retire at the end of 2023, won his second English classic of 2023 following Chaldean’s victory in the 2000 Guineas last month.  The filly Tuesday is an excellent racehorse in her own right, as she showed winning the Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Turf last fall, but it was only because of a terrible start that Emily Upjohn finished second behind her in last year’s Oaks. Emily Upjohn went from the Oaks to face older males in the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes in July and performed miserably. She returned with a vengeance in October with an easy victory in the Group 1 British Champions Fillies and Mares Stakes, was pointed for and pulled back from making her 2023 debut in the Sheema Classic on March 25 in Dubai, and instead returned to action with a impressive victory Friday in the 1 1/2-mile Coronation.  :: Take your handicapping to the next level and play with FREE DRF Past Performances - Formulator or Classic.  As Point Lonsdale and Hurricane Lane disputed the pace, Dettori sat quietly with Emily Upjohn at the back of a five-horse field. Beginning to unwind three furlongs out, Emily Upohn moved quickly into contention, made the lead with about a quarter-mile to race, and coasted to a 1 3/4-length win over Westover, winner of the 2022 Irish Derby and a fine second last out in Equinox’s awesome Sheema Classic. Point Lonsdale was more than seven lengths farther back in third, followed by Tunnes and Hurricane Lane. By Sea The Stars out of Hidden Brief, by Barathea, Emily Upjohn could next see action at the Royal Ascot meet.  Soul Sister probably appreciated the good-to-firm going Friday at Epsom more than odds-on favorite Savethelastdance, who had no answer when Soul Sister came with her run in the 1 1/2-mile Oaks. Coming from last again, Dettori patiently eased his mount into the race, never asking for too much, too soon, and while Soul Sister didn’t finish with the force of Emily Upjohn, she comfortably bested Savethelastdance to win by 1 3/4 lengths. Longshot Caenarfon finished third, while Running Lion, third choice for the Gosdens and jockey Oisin Murphy, was scratched after knocking herself on the gate, then getting loose after being backed out for a veterinary examination. She is likely to be redirected to the Prix de Diane at Chantilly, John Gosden said. Soul Sister, making her Group 1 debut. is by Frankel out of Dream Peace, by Dansili.  Prix du Jockey Club Epictetus, meanwhile, is one of 11 in the 1 5/16-mile Prix du Jockey Club at Chantilly, where the going is much softer this weekend than at Epsom Downs. That should help Epictetus, who has strong form over heavy going last fall finishing second behind Auguste Rodin in the Group 1 Vertem Futurity and ran below form over good-to-firm last month finishing fifth in the Dante Stakes.   O’Brien and Ryan Moore have the Dante’s third-place finisher, Continuous, for the Prix du Jockey Club. The leading French hopes are Marhaba Ya Sanafi, upset winner of the French 2000 Guineas; American Flag, who fourth in the French Guineas; and Big Rock, who has won all four of his starts this year, two at the Group 3 level, by open lengths and probably is the best hope among the local contingent. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering?
