Elmer Heubeck dead at 85

Glenye Cain Oakford|May 14, 2003

LEXINGTON, Ky. - Elmer Heubeck, one of the Florida Thoroughbred industry's founding fathers, died on May 12. He was 85.

Heubeck developed two of Florida's most notable Thoroughbred operations, Rosemere and Hobeau Farms. Both helped put Ocala on the map in the Thoroughbred game.

Hobeau raced such horses as Beau Purple, who defeated Kelso three times; Onion, who beat Secretariat in the Whitney; and Prove Out, who beat Secretariat in the Woodward.

Heubeck is survived by his wife, Harriet, and a son, Kerry.
