Ellis Park re-opens to fans after water issues on opening day
Ellis Park in Henderson, Ky., will allow patrons into its racetrack and casino on Friday, one day after conducting its opening-day race card in front of an empty grandstand because of water issues.
First post for Friday’s live race card is 12:50 p.m. Eastern, and the track’s attached casino opened at 9 a.m., Ellis said in a Friday morning press release.
Storm damage on Wednesday night caused problems with the track’s water systems, but track officials said Thursday morning there was enough water to conduct live racing operations. The opening-day card went ahead as planned, but no patrons were allowed in the track or casino.
“Thank you to our staff, the local Henderson community, and racing fans for their patience,” said Matt Pressley, general manager of Ellis, which is owned by Churchill Downs Inc. “We’re looking forward to seeing everyone at the track today.”
