Ellis: Miss Fortunate catches 'Mayo'

Ira Kaplan|Jul 10, 2004

When favored Mayo on the Side looped most of the field and took the lead in the stretch, it looked as if the $75,000 HBPA Handicap at Ellis Park was over. But Miss Fortunate and Brian Peck came flying late and nailed Mayo on the Side at the wire to win the one-mile race for fillies and mares by a half-length.

Sue's Good News and There Runs Hattie set the pace in the HBPA, with the quarter going in 24.13 seconds, the half in 47.43, and six furlongs in 1:12.32. Mayo on the Side went past Sue's Good News in early stretch and opened up what seemed to be a sufficient margin. But Miss Fortunate ($9.40), owned by Lyon Stables and trained by Bill Mott, made the last move, covering the mile in 1:37.24.
