Ellamira wins Companile 5-1-2022
Shane Micheli / Vassar Photography Ellamira has now won 3 of 8 starts after Sunday's win in the Campanile at Golden Gate Fields.

Ellamira closed from last in a field of seven California-bred 3-year-old fillies to win her second stakes, and first of 2022, in Sunday’s $75,900 Campanile Stakes at a mile at Golden Gate Fields.

Ellamira completed a sweep of the track’s two turf stakes for statebred 3-year-olds on Sunday for trainer Steve Specht and jockey Frank Alvarado. Earlier, they teamed to win the $75,000 Silky Sullivan Stakes at a mile on turf with Royal ‘n Rando.

Ellamira ($6.80) rallied four-wide on the turn to reach contention in early stretch, a move that propelled her to a length over 9-1 Vincero Grande. Tam’s Little Angel, trained by Specht, finished third at 7-2.

By Street Boss, Ellamira was timed in 1:38.04. Ellamira races for Cole Ranch Partners. Last fall, Ellamira won a division of the Golden Gate Debutante at six furlongs on the synthetic main track.

Earlier this year, Ellamira finished a troubled fourth in two stakes at Santa Anita – the California Cup Oaks for statebreds and the Grade 3 Sweet Life Stakes on the track’s hillside turf course. Ellamira has won 3 of 8 starts and earned $136,006.

Royal ‘n Rando ($16.20) closed from fourth in a field of five to edge 2-1 Highland Ghost by a nose in the Silky Sullivan Stakes.

Royal ‘n Rando trailed by slightly more than three lengths in the final furlong, but still reached the front in time.

Worse Read Sanchez, the 3-5 favorite, finished third, losing by slightly more than 1 1/4 lengths. Cowboy Charlie and Northvale Road completed the order of finish. What in Blazes, third in the Echo Eddie Stakes at Santa Anita on April 9, was withdrawn and listed on the official chart as a scratch for veterinary reasons.

Royal ‘n Rando ran a mile in 1:37.28, winning for the fourth time in his last six starts. The streak began with a win in a $20,000 claimer for maidens at a mile on Jan. 14.

Royal ‘n Rando, a gelding by Tamarando, had his stakes debut in the Silky Sullivan Stakes. He has won 4 of 11 starts and earned $106,658.
