Eclipse Award champion Elite Power will retire to Juddmonte Farm in Kentucky after seeking to defend his victory in next month's Breeders' Cup Sprint, the farm announced on Friday.
Elite Power, by emerging sire of sires Curlin, will join Mandaloun, the promoted winner of the still-in-litigation 2021 Kentucky Derby, in the stallion complex at Juddmonte, which has been selective in standing even its own colorbearers in recent history. Prior to Mandaloun this year, the last runner Juddmonte retired directly to its Kentucky farm was champion Arrogate in 2018, who stood three seasons before his death in 2020.
Elite Power, bred by Alpha Delta Stables, was purchased for $900,000 by Juddmonte as a Keeneland September yearling, with the international operation becoming active in this arena in order to diversify its bloodlines and give it more power in American dirt races. Elite Power, trained by Bill Mott, has won eight of 12 career starts to date for earnings of more than $2.7 million. He won five straight races in 2022, capped by the Grade 2 Vosburgh and the Breeders' Cup Sprint at Keeneland to secure divisional honors.
This year, Elite Power stretched his win streak to eight with wins in the Group 3 Riyadh Dirt Sprint, Grade 2 True north, and Grade 1 Alfred G. Vanderbilt. Gunite, the runner-up in the Vanderbilt, came back to best Elite Power in the Grade 1 Forego last out to end the win streak. Elite Power is still the early 5-2 favorite on Brad Free's morning line for the Daily Racing Form for the Breeders' Cup Sprint, set for Nov. 4 at Santa Anita.
Elite Power is out of Grade 2 winner and Kentucky Oaks runner-up Broadway's Alibi. This is the family of champion Eliza, and of Grade 1 winner and successful sire Dialed In.
