With eligibility conditions changed, Oceanside is now a listed stakes

The revamped Oceanside Stakes for 3-year-olds at a mile on turf will be run as a listed stakes at Del Mar in July.

The race was previously restricted to non-winners of a first-place purse of $50,000 or more to the winner at a mile or more in the calendar year in which it was run. The eligibility restriction often prevented two-turn stakes winners in the first six months of the year from starting in the Oceanside.

Last month, Del Mar announced that the Oceanside would be run without restricted eligibility and would be worth $150,000, an increase of $50,000 from past year.

This summer, the track will not run the $100,000 La Jolla Handicap at 1 1/16 miles on turf for 3-year-olds. The race was run in the first half of August.

The Oceanside serves as a prep race for the main race of the summer meeting for 3-year-olds on turf, the Grade 2 Del Mar Derby on Aug. 23.

Earlier this week, the Kentucky-based American graded stakes committee announced the designation of the Oceanside Stakes has been changed from listed-restricted to listed, one level below Grade 3 status.
