El Pando notches first stakes win with Clever Trevor

El Pando backed up his impressive debut win with a stakes victory Friday night when he rallied past dueling leaders Concept and Feel the Fear for a 3 3/4-length victory in the $100,000 Clever Trevor at Remington Park.
Revenir closed for second, while it was another two lengths back in third to Kentucky Bourbon.
The Clever Trevor, which was for 2-year-olds, served as the final local steppingstone to the $400,000 Springboard Mile. The latter race, which carries points for the Kentucky Derby, will be run Dec. 17 at Remington.
El Pando ($5.60) won his career debut by 8 3/4 lengths Sept. 15 at Remington Park, earning an 86 Beyer Speed Figure. He made his second start in the Clever Trevor, and settled just off fractions of 22.11 seconds for the opening quarter and 45.23 for the half-mile, before rolling past rivals in the lane and going on to cover seven furlongs on a fast track in 1:24.13.
David Cabrera was aboard the winner for owner and trainer Jaylan Clary.
Clary is the daughter of Mike Neatherlin, an owner and trainer who died in September at 65, according to a press release from Remington.
“My dad bought El Pando when he was a yearling,” Clary told the press office at Remington. “We put him back in the Texas Thoroughbred Association 2-year-olds in training sale and then Dad said, ‘We’re not going to sell him.’ ”
El Pando is a son of Outwork. He earned $60,000 for his win in the Clever Trevor.
