El Corredor: Leading New York sire by stakes winners, stakes wins, turf winners
It’s important for a sire to be well represented with winners, but the ones with runners who win when it counts stand above the rest.
By that measure, El Corredor starts his New York stallion career at the front of the line. He led all sires based in the state in 2013 by stakes wins and stakes winners as well as by number of turf winners in 2012.
A 16-year-old son of Mr. Greeley, El Corredor was represented by nine stakes winners who combined to win 14 stakes in 2012, led by multiple New York stakes winner Beautiful But Blue.
Following his move from Hill ’n’ Dale Farms in Lexington, Ky., in October, El Corredor begins his first season at Questroyal North in Stillwater, N.Y., where he stands for a fee of $7,500. He arrived in January after spending the Southern Hemisphere season in Argentina.
“He’s already proven,” said Sara Dunham, farm manager at Questroyal North. “He’s the real thing, and we’re really excited to have him here at Questroyal North. He’s off to a great start in 2013, and I expect a full book of mares.”
Beautiful But Blue, a 4-year-old filly, won three stakes races last year: the Bouwerie Stakes at Belmont, the Fleet Indian Stakes at Saratoga, and the Windswept Wings Stakes at Aqueduct. She was also third in the Grade 1 Test Stakes and the lucrative Charles Town Oaks.
Other stakes winners by El Corredor came from all over the map, including multiple Louisiana stakes winner Little Ms Protocol; Kentucky stakes winner Luzianna Man; Canadian stakes winners Tee Game, Terlani, and Golden Stripe; Argentine stakes winner Breda; Saudi Arabian stakes winner Qatoomah; Mexican stakes winner El Biologo; and Korean stakes winner Wonderday.
El Corredor also topped the New York sire list by winners on turf with 20, equating to 19 percent of his total winners. His turf progeny was led by multiple graded stakes-placed Zultanite, who won 1 of 9 starts on grass last year and earned $115,102. The 4-year-old filly finished second in the Grade 3 Boiling Springs Stakes and third in the Grade 2 Sands Point Stakes.
El Corredor was best at sprint and mile distances in his racing career, winning 7 of 10 starts and earning $727,920. He won the Grade 1 Cigar Mile Handicap at Aqueduct and two editions of the Grade 2 Del Mar Breeders’ Cup Handicap.El Corredor was the first foal out of Silver Deputy mare Silvery Swan, dam of successful sire Roman Ruler.
