Edison to ship to Canterbury for Mystic Lake Derby next

Speaking from Canterbury Park, trainer Robertino Diodoro said that Edison came out of his romp in the Grade 3, $195,720 Canadian Derby at Northlands Park last Saturday in good shape.
Diodoro plans to ship Edison on Wednesday from Northlands to Canterbury, where he will be pointed toward the $200,000 Mystic Lake Derby on Sept. 13. Plan B is the Grade 3, $400,000 Oklahoma Derby at Remington Park on Sept. 28. If Edison runs in the one-mile Mystic Lake Derby, he would be returning to turf. Last year, Diodoro won the Oklahoma Derby with Canadian Derby winner Broadway Empire.
Assiniboia Downs-based trainer Rob Atras has helped Diodoro with Edison since he won the Harry Jeffrey Stakes in Winnipeg on July 16.
“Rob said he ate up everything and seems fine,” said Diodoro. “You never know how much running a mile and three-eighths is going to take out of them, so the Oklahoma Derby gives him a little more time to bounce back. It’s been a real team effort. I have horses spread out from Del Mar to Canterbury, and I couldn’t do this without having great help.”
Edison earned a 74 Beyer Speed Figure for his 11 1/2-length win over Remembertobreathe in the Canadian Derby. Last year, Broadway Empire received an 87 Beyer for his Canadian Derby win over Reporting Star, who just missed winning his fourth straight race at Woodbine in the Grade 2 Sky Classic last Saturday.
“They are completely different horses, but the thing I like about Edison is that he is lightly raced and just keeps getting better,” said Diodoro.
