Edgeway wins the 2021 Rancho Bernardo Handicap at Del Mar

Emily Shields Edgeway wins the Aug. 20 Rancho Bernardo by one length. She will go straight to the Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Sprint on Nov. 6.

ARCADIA, Calif. - Edgeway will be up against it facing one of the most heavily favored runners of the 2021 Breeders’ Cup, but trainer John Sadler will take his best shot by sending Edgeway into the Filly and Mare Sprint as a fresh filly.

Sadler acknowledged that, at least on paper, “nobody can beat Gamine. But who’s in the second tier? – Frank’s Rockette, Edgeway, maybe Kimari. I’m going to train [Edgeway] into the Breeders’ Cup. She does well with spacing.”

Edgeway, 5 for 8, won the Grade 3 Rancho Bernardo on Aug. 20 at Del Mar. Candidates for the Filly and Mare Sprint also include Bella Sofia, Ce Ce, Sconsin, Bell’s the One, and Lake Avenue. The local Filly and Mare Sprint prep is the Grade 3 Chillingworth on Oct. 3. Candidates for the 6 1/2-furlong Chillingworth include Proud Emma and Ce Ce.
