Edgeway has options after big Beyer debut

HOT SPRINGS, Ark. – Hronis Racing and trainer John Sadler have some fun decisions to make with Edgeway, who put up the second-best Beyer Speed Figure for a 3-year-old filly this year when she won her debut last Saturday at Oaklawn Park.

“There’s all kind of spots for her,” Sadler said.

Edgeway earned a Beyer of 94 for her five-length win in a maiden special weight over six furlongs. The number ranks second to the 98 that Frank’s Rockette earned for her win in the $75,000 Any Limit on Feb. 22 at Gulfstream Park.

Edgeway, who was ridden by Tyler Baze, set fractions of 22.37 seconds for the opening quarter and 45.55 for the half-mile before winning in a sharp 1:09.05.

“She drew the one hole and was able to overcome a little bit of a slow start and win pretty easy,” Sadler said. “She’d been training very well. It’s nice to see it all come together.”

Sadler said plans are yet to be determined for Edgeway, but options at Oaklawn are the $150,000 Purple Martin at six furlongs April 4 or the Grade 3, $600,000 Fantasy at 1 1/16 miles on April 10.

“I think she’s going to stretch out just fine,” Sadler said. “It’s just a question of whether we go short with her again or longer the second start. But those are the two we’d probably be looking at over there for her.”

Edgeway is a daughter of Grade 1 winner Competitive Edge. Her stakes-winning dam, Magical Solution, is a half-sister to Grade 1 winner The Lumber Guy.

Sadler, who is based in Southern California, has a division at Oaklawn for the first time. He has a handful of runners pointing to some upcoming local stakes. Sadler said Campaign, who is a multiple Grade 3 winner, could run next in the $125,000 Temperence Hill. The new 1 1/2-mile race for 4-year-olds and up is March 13.

Higher Power, a Grade 1 winner, or Combatant, who was third in the Grade 2 San Pasqual last month at Santa Anita, could run in the $350,000 Essex Handicap here March 14, Sadler said. Both horses are owned by Hronis Racing.
