Eddie Haskell among notable workers at Santa Anita

There were several notable workouts on Friday at Santa Anita for upcoming stakes in late September and early October as the build-up intensifies for the Breeders’ Cup races on Nov. 1-2.
The Grade 2 Eddie D Stakes at five furlongs on turf on Sept. 27 is scheduled to include Eddie Haskell, a two-time stakes winner in turf sprints earlier this year, who worked a half-mile in 48.80 seconds on Friday. Eddie Haskell was second to Eddie D candidate Mr Vargas in the Grade 3 Green Flash Handicap at Del Mar on Aug. 17.
Stormy Liberal, the champion turf male of 2018 and third in the Green Flash, is a candidate for the Eddie D.
On Sept. 27, trainer Peter Miller plans to run Leucothea in the Grade 1 Chandelier Stakes for 2-year-old fillies at 1 1/16 miles. Leucothea, last of eight in the Grade 1 Del Mar Debutante on Aug. 31, worked five furlongs in 1:03.40.
Trainer Doug O’Neill plans to start Defense Wins and Fore Left in the American Pharoah on Sept. 27 and Buyer’s Remorse and Comical in the Chandelier.
Defense Wins and Fore Left were third and fifth in the Del Mar Futurity. Friday, Defense Wins worked six furlongs in 1:15, while Fore Left worked the same distance in 1:13.20. Comical worked six furlongs in 1:16.80 and covered her last furlong in 12 seconds, O’Neill said.
In other notable works, Encoder, the winner of the Del Mar Juvenile Turf, worked five furlongs in 1:01.80 for the Zuma Beach Stakes for 2-year-old turf milers on Oct. 6.
United, second in the Grade 2 Charles Whittingham Stakes at Santa Anita in May, worked seven furlongs in 1:25.60 for the Grade 2 John Henry Turf Championship at 1 1/4 miles on turf on Sept. 28.
Grecian Fire, third in the Grade 2 Del Mar Mile on Aug. 18, is a candidate for the $200,000 John Henry Turf Championship.
“He’s never been that far,” trainer Keith Desormeaux said. “He seems like he can run that far.”
