Ed Burke Million Futurity goes to Flokie
CYPRESS, Calif. – Flokie, bought as a yearling for $10,700 at the 2018 Heritage Place Winter Mixed Sale in Oklahoma City, won Sunday’s $1,070,000 Ed Burke Million Futurity at Los Alamitos, the first of three seven-figure futurities at the track this year.
Ridden by Jairo Rangel, Flokie ($14.40) edged fastest qualifier Dreams Divine by a nose, finishing 350 yards in 17.54 seconds. Dreams Divine (3-1) finished a neck in front of Geothermal, the 5-2 favorite in a field of nine.
Flokie and Dreams Divine were nearly inseparable in the final strides before Flokie put his nose in front at the finish.
The win was worth $432,600 for J. Francisco Diaz and co-owner and trainer Jose Flores. Flokie, purchased as a yearling, has won 2 of 3 starts. A gelding, Flokie won a division of the Ed Burke time trials on June 9 and had the second-fastest qualifying time.
Flores said in the winner’s circle that Flokie will be rested through the summer and will be pointed for the two seven-figure futurities at Los Alamitos later this year – the Golden State Million in November and the Los Alamitos Two Million Futurity in December.
