ETOBIOCOKE, Ontario – The once-beaten speedster Earhart cuts back to six furlongs off a layoff in the $150,000 Whimsical Stakes on Saturday at Woodbine and should be favored in the Grade 3 fixture for fillies and mares. Trained by Josie Carroll for LNJ Foxwoods, Earhart made quite a splash while debuting here on Nov. 9, wiring maidens by 6 3/4 lengths with an 86 Beyer Speed Figure. A month later, she annexed the first-allowance condition in another seven-furlong Tapeta tilt, winning by 11 lengths with a big 96 Beyer under Rafael Hernandez, who has the mount on Saturday. Earhart started once over the winter at Turfway Park in the Jan. 25 Likely Exchange Stakes. Sent off as the 7-10 favorite in the one-mile Tapeta event, she was softened up in a speed duel and eventually faded to third in her first race without Lasix. Earhart has been working strongly here of late, including a five-furlong breeze in a bullet 59 last Sunday. Back on Lasix, the French-bred breaks from post 1 in the five-horse field. :: DRF Kentucky Derby Package: Save on PPs, Clocker Reports, Betting Strategies, and more. Trainer Mark Casse sends out the comebackers Ticker Tape Home and Star Candy. Ticker Tape Home took two of five starts last year, a conditioned allowance and the Grade 3 Seaway Stakes traveling seven furlongs, for which she earned an 89 Beyer. She has been idle since a chalky fourth in the Grade 3 Ontario Fashion Oct. 12 but has been able to find the mark in two of her three previous layoff races. Star Candy cleared two allowance conditions in 2024, during which she failed to earn black type in a series of stakes on turf and Tapeta. A slow pace hindered her chances last out, when she was a belated fifth in the Grade 3 Bessarabian on Nov. 9. The Casse duo, both 5-year-olds owned by Live Oak Plantation, have been working together, with Ticker Tape Home getting the upper hand in a five-furlong breeze in 1:00.20 from the gate on April 18. “It was a really good work for both,” said Casse assistant Kathryn Sullivan. American shippers Gal in a Rush and Ms. Tart complete the lineup. The Christophe Clement-trained closer Gal in a Rush came from New York to land the Grade 3 Hendrie here last July over Owen’s Tour Guide and the future Canadian champion female sprinter Play the Music. Gal in a Rush subsequently ran second in the Seaway before missing the board in both the Ontario Fashion and Bessarabian. Gal in a Rush wintered at Payson Park in Florida, where she has been working since late March. Ms. Tart was haltered from a conditioned claiming victory for $35,000 at Gulfstream Park in January by trainer Kevin Rice, who sent her out to win back-to-back 5 1/2-furlong allowances there in her last two outings. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering?
