E Dubai's Humor takes next step
E Dubai’s Humor made short work of the competition in her debut, and on Thursday she will step up into allowance company for the $42,000 allowance feature at Laurel Park.
E Dubai’s Humor’s trainer, Donald Barr, won back-to-back 2-year-old maiden races at Laurel on Oct. 11. E Dubai’s Humor cruised to a 4 1/4-length victory over a sloppy track in the sixth race, leaving her rivals strung out behind her. In the seventh, Savvy Street, a Street Sense colt, won an off-the-turf maiden race by 3 3/4 lengths.
Barr thought enough of the wins to nominate E Dubai’s Humor to the Grade 3 Tempted and Savvy Street to the Grade 2 Nashua, both of which were run at Aqueduct last Sunday. He has instead opted to stay home.
“I wanted to take a look at those races in New York, but they came up pretty tough and it’s hard to go up there off a maiden win without something in between,” Barr said. “And, I have options at Laurel for both of them.”
E Dubai’s Humor is Maryland-bred and is eligible for the $100,000 Maryland Juvenile Filly Championship on Dec. 26. There also is an open stakes for 2-year-old fillies, the $100,000 Gin Talking, on Dec. 6. Both of those races are seven furlongs.
Barr, a longtime trainer on the Maryland circuit, may be best known as the trainer of Ravalo, whom he conditioned from 2006 through 2011. During that time, the best of Ravalo’s career, he won 17 of 48 starts and more than $1.25 million.
Barr is 7 for 22 with a $5.01 return on investment at the current Laurel meet.
The allowance, race 8, goes at 4:12 p.m. Eastern.
Key contenders
E Dubai’s Humor (Beyer: 76)
◗ Her debut Beyer Speed Figure is by far the highest of anyone in the field.
FORMULATOR FACT: Barr is 4 for 12 with 2-year-olds this year for a $5.20 ROI. “I do have a pretty good bunch of young horses this year,” he said.
Comforter (Last 3 Beyers: 66-66-45)
◗ After scoring a nine-length maiden win at Delaware in her second start, she was third last out in the Aug. 31 Sorority Stakes at Monmouth Park.
◗ Trained by Scott Lake, she will enter this race off a 67-day layoff.
FORMULATOR FACT: During the last five years, Lake is 51 for 319 (16 percent) and has an ROI of $1.59 with horses running back following a break of between 45 and 75 days.
Cursive (Last 3 Beyers: 56-56-42)
◗ Has won 2 of her last 3 starts, all for trainer Hamilton Smith.
◗ Two starts back, she was second in a first-level optional-claiming race to Rocky Policy, who came back to finish second, beaten a neck, in the Maryland Million Lassie.
◗ Cursive likes to settle off the early pace and could be the beneficiary if things get too crowded on the front end.
Tamars Girl (Last 3 Beyers: 56-31)
◗ After finishing ninth at Monmouth Park in her debut, she won a $40,000 maiden-claiming race here by three lengths Oct. 2. She is trained by Rudy Rodriguez.
