Dynasty Energy one to fear in Los Alamitos Winter Derby
Dynasty Energy did not have the fastest qualifying time when he won a division of the Los Alamitos Winter Derby trials on Jan. 23.
Dynasty Energy ran 400 yards in 19.92 seconds, slightly slower than Rite Regal, who ran 19.86 seconds two races earlier to be the fastest qualifier for Saturday’s $215,250 final.
What makes Dynasty Energy an appealing runner on Saturday is the company the gelding has kept in recent starts. On Dec. 13, Dynasty Energy was third by a half-length to Ima Fearless Hero in the Los Alamitos Two Million Futurity. Ima Fearless Hero was named champion 2-year-old gelding of 2015 by the American Quarter Horse Association last month.
In December, Ima Fearless Hero underwent surgery to have a bone chip removed from a knee, and is currently out of action.
Dynasty Energy and Rite Regal were two of the five winners of four trials on Jan. 23. Dynasty Energy finished in a dead heat with Uno Corona Mas. Luv On the Run and Senor Gianni won trials.
Dynasty Energy has won 4 of 8 starts and earned $253,511 for owners and breeders Jay and Char Parsons and trainer Christopher O’Dell. Last July, Dynasty Energy won the minor California Breeders’ Freshman Stakes at Los Alamitos.
Dynasty Energy’s earnings are the highest of the 10 qualifiers for the Winter Derby. Two other finalists ran in the Two Million Futurity – Jess a Pollitician, who was fifth, and Senor Gianni, who finished seventh.
Jess a Pollitician was a troubled fourth behind Rite Regal in the Winter Derby trials, and could be a factor in the final with a better trip from the rail. Jose Antonio Flores trains Jess a Pollitician and Rite Regal.
Paul Jones has three qualifiers – Chicks Fayvorite, Jess Good Reason, and Senor Gianni. Jess Good Reason won the minor Holiday Handicap on Dec. 27 and was beaten for the first time in four starts when second to Rite Regal in the trials.
