Dwyer pits husband against wife

Barry Schwartz and his wife, Sheryl, may be sitting at the same table here Saturday, but they will have different rooting interests in the Grade 3, $200,000 Dwyer Stakes.
Barry Schwartz owns the undefeated New York-bred gelding Captain Serious, while Sheryl is part-owner of Kid Cruz. Those are the protagonists in the Dwyer, which drew a field of six 3-year-olds and will go as race 4.
Captain Serious, a gelding by Successful Appeal, has won all three of his starts but has yet to run farther than seven furlongs. Kid Cruz, a son of Lemon Drop Kid, is coming off a win in the $150,000 Easy Goer Stakes at the Dwyer distance of 1 1/16 miles on the Belmont Stakes undercard.
Kid Cruz will break from the rail, while Captain Serious breaks from post 4. The others entered are Spot, the winner of the Grade 2 Swale at Gulfstream; Ulbanator, second to Tapiture in the Grade 3 Matt Winn Stakes at Churchill; Tiz Dark, a sharp maiden winner here May 25; and Gaining Ground.
Bay of Plenty, who was scheduled to run in the Dwyer, has been sidelined due to a foot issue, according to trainer Kiaran McLaughlin. He said the horse could soon resume training.
