Dutrow wins two Dubai stakes

Marcus Hersh|Mar 29, 2008

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates The trainer Rick Dutrow had never shipped a horse to Dubai until this year. Dutrow sent two this time, and won with both of them.

With Edgar Prado doing the riding honors, the Dutrow-trained Benny the Bull won the $2 million Golden Shaheen just more than an hour after Diamond Stripes had captured the $1 million Godolphin Mile.

Benny the Bull, winner of the Sunshine Millions Sprint and the Grade 1 De Francis Dash in his last two starts, broke well in the Group 1 Golden Shaheen, but soon took up a mid-pack position while racing in the middle of the racetrack. Another American shipper, Idiot Proof, was always prominent in the six-furlong straight-course race, inheriting the lead about a quarter-mile from the finish. But Benny the Bull and Prado had him marked, and pushed past to win by 1 3/4 lengths.

Idiot Proof, who ran well, easily held second over Star Crowned, with well-backed Diabolical a flat seventh. Benny the Bull was timed in 1:08.70, only the third time in 13 editions of the race that the winner has broken 1:09.

Diamond Stripes was equally dominant, staying on down at the fence after being passed in midstretch by Rosberg and Elusive Warning. Close to a solid pace, Diamond Stripes gave way to early runs from the pretenders, but prevailed on class and stamina, coming back for a 1 1/4-length victory. Don Renato finished third, nosing out the former American horse Zakocity. Diamond Stripes was timed in 1:36.96.

DeKock wins another UAE Derby

The trainer Mike DeKock captured his fourth UAE Derby, sweeping the top two placings this year with Honour Devil and Royal Vintage. Honour Devil went clear before the furlong pole, and was alone at the finish, beating his stablemate by 4 1/4 lengths. The Godolphin filly Cocoa Beach finished third.
