Dutrow odds-on for win No. 2,000
?q=100)
It’s not often that you’ll see a 1-5 favorite on the morning line at Tampa Bay Downs or most anywhere else, but those are the odds set by Mark Luther on a 3-year-old filly named Redifined ahead of the Wednesday feature at Tampa.
Redifined will have Antonio Gallardo aboard breaking from the outside post in a field of six in the fifth of nine races. The daughter of More Than Ready is trained by Tony Dutrow, who has been sitting on 1,999 career wins since Feb. 17 and would hit the 2,000-win milestone if she prevails as expected.
Dutrow, who turns 65 next month, said his last day at Tampa will be Wednesday as he’ll be moving his stable back to his primary base at Belmont Park. The Hagerstown, Md., native is the older brother of Rick Dutrow, who recently was approved to resume his training career following a 10-year suspension. Both men are the sons of the late Richard “Dickie” Dutrow, a highly successful trainer based in Maryland, then New York, prior to his 1999 death.
Redifined will be making her first start in nearly five months while surely prepping for more demanding assignments. After finishing second in back-to-back stakes at Aqueduct, the Grade 3 Matron and Stewart Manor, she’ll be taking a massive class edge into this $24,000, first-level allowance going five furlongs on turf. Grand Oak (post 4, Angel Suarez) and Kerry (post 5, Samy Camacho) look like the most likely exacta-enders.
First post Wednesday is 12:20 p.m. Eastern, with the nominal feature going at 2:19. A second allowance for older horses going six furlongs on the main track directly follows as race 6. Cloudy skies and a high of 79 are in the local forecast.
